When roads are wet, the California DMV suggests driving 5-10 MPH slower than posted speed limits.<br><br>This next tip might seem obvious, but it\u2019s important to <strong>turn on your windshield wipers and headlights<\/strong> when you\u2019re driving in the rain. Not only will it be easier for you to see, headlights will also make it easier for others on the road to see you. In California, if you have reason to use your windshield wipers then you have a legal obligation to turn on your headlights.<br><br>Next, <strong>put some distance between your car and other vehicles on the road<\/strong>. As you know, it can take longer to stop when roads are wet and it\u2019s harder to react when you\u2019re driving in low visibility. Leave extra room and give yourself extra time to slow down and avoid an accident.<br><br><strong>Avoid large puddles and standing water<\/strong>. In heavy rain, at higher speeds, your tires could lose contact with the road &#8211; instead, your vehicle will be riding on top of water. This is called hydroplaning. It\u2019s hard to control your car when you\u2019re hydroplaning. So if you do hydroplane, don\u2019t slam on the brakes and try not to panic. Simply take your foot off the gas and gently turn your steering wheel in the direction you\u2019re skidding. Slow down gradually. Your tires should reconnect with the road surface and give you back control.<br><br>If the rain or foggy windows make it too hard to see, <strong>pull over somewhere safe<\/strong> and wait a few minutes for the weather to change. There is no reason to put yourself, or others, in danger if it\u2019s not necessary. Take a break.<br><br><strong>And, finally, keep your vehicle maintenance up to date.<\/strong> Make sure your headlights, tail lights and windshield wipers are working correctly. Replace your tires, wiper blades or brakes when needed. Tire tread can seriously effect your traction, especially during wet conditions. Overused wiper blades can make it even harder to see on rainy days.
