Considering a new car? Get behind the wheel before you make your final decision. A test drive can tell you a lot about a car or truck. Make sure it has the features you want and that you’re comfortable in the driver’s seat before you sign on the dotted line. The Folsom Auto Mall is happy to give you tips on how to make the most of your test drive.

Before you visit a dealership, do your research.
Make a list of features you prioritize and visit manufacturer websites to find out which models meet your needs and expectations. You can see what colors are available, engine options and available equipment. Compare the trim levels to make sure the model you’re interested in comes with the features you want.

Then, call ahead.
Contact the dealership to ensure the vehicle you actually want is in stock and available for a test drive. You might be able to book an appointment online, but speaking to someone at the dealership may be a safer bet. In most cases, they can have the vehicle cleaned and waiting for your arrival so no time is wasted. Don’t forget your driver’s license!

Bring a friend.
It’s always good to have a second opinion. You might even consider taking turns driving so you can experience the drive from the passenger seat and back seat as well. Additionally, a copilot will be able to play with all the gadgets, buttons and gizmos (or give you the opportunity to try them for yourself) without distracting from the actual drive. Being able to discuss the pros and cons of the vehicle after the test drive is a bonus - as you might have different points of view and take notice of different things.

Test all the features.
New technology is introduced all the time. Press all the buttons; try out the entertainment system. See if you can figure out how to program radio stations, use the cruise control and check driving data. Is everything user-friendly and within easy reach? Do the controls feel comfortable and intuitive? How do these features stack up against the competition? Do the driver assistance features work as advertised?

Next, drive it like it’s already yours.
What’s the point of a test drive if you’re not driving ‘normally’? Of course you need to obey traffic laws and drive safely, but go ahead and move the seats, adjust the mirrors and drive like you would in your own vehicle. Get a feel for its acceleration, deceleration, steering and braking. Try it out on side streets and take it on a highway.

Ask questions.
That’s what the salesperson is there for. Make sure you understand all the features of the vehicle. Don’t be embarrassed to ask any questions you have about the vehicle (its features), the manufacturer, gas mileage, potential recalls or its warranty. Plus, this is your opportunity to ask about dealership policies and special offers.

Buying a vehicle is a big decision; we hope these tips make it easier for you. Go ahead and schedule a test drive of your favorite model at the Folsom Auto Mall. And make the most of it!
