For years, people have been recommending filling your tires with nitrogen instead of just plain old air. The claims range from reducing air loss to improving safety - but it is real? Is it necessary? Does it help? Read on to learn more.

Nitrogen in your tires reduces air loss

The idea that nitrogen in your tires reduces air loss comes from the fact that nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules. This theoretically makes it harder for air to escape your tires and therefore means you should get better tire air pressure retention. But how much? Realistically, the answer is, “Not enough to matter.” If you’re considering the cost/benefit analysis, you’d find that the cost of nitrogen doesn’t match up to the nearly insignificant benefit - especially when you consider that air is free!

What about the improved fuel economy claim? That claim is based entirely on your tire pressure. So, as long as you check and maintain your optimal tire pressure, it doesn’t matter if your tire is filled with nitrogen or regular air. The dealerships at the Folsom Auto Mall check tire pressure during every service inspection.

Nitrogen preserves your tires better than air

Another claim is that nitrogen preserves your tires better than air when considering tire aging and wheel corrosion. This has to do with water getting inside your tire and rotting the wheel from the inside out. However, unless you’re planning on your storing your vehicle for long periods of time, you’re going to run out of tread long before moisture corrosion sets in. If you ARE planning on storing your vehicle, nitrogen might be a good option for you. If your vehicle is a daily driver, you likely don’t need to worry about corrosion. But you should absolutely replace your tires when the tread wears thin (approx. 4/32 of remaining tread depth).
