Rainy season has arrived in Northern California. The Folsom Auto Mall thought it might be a good idea to share information on how to safely drive in the rain. We’ve collected tried and true tips to help you out when you’re on the road in wet conditions.

First, drive slower. Reduced speed will give you more time to react to potentially dangerous situations and will enable to you brake safely. It’s easier to see through your windshield in the rain when you’re driving slower and you’ll be able to avoid road hazards and flooding. When roads are wet, the California DMV suggests driving 5-10 MPH slower than posted speed limits.

This next tip might seem obvious, but it’s important to turn on your windshield wipers and headlights when you’re driving in the rain. Not only will it be easier for you to see, headlights will also make it easier for others on the road to see you. In California, if you have reason to use your windshield wipers then you have a legal obligation to turn on your headlights.

Next, put some distance between your car and other vehicles on the road. As you know, it can take longer to stop when roads are wet and it’s harder to react when you’re driving in low visibility. Leave extra room and give yourself extra time to slow down and avoid an accident.

Avoid large puddles and standing water. In heavy rain, at higher speeds, your tires could lose contact with the road - instead, your vehicle will be riding on top of water. This is called hydroplaning. It’s hard to control your car when you’re hydroplaning. So if you do hydroplane, don’t slam on the brakes and try not to panic. Simply take your foot off the gas and gently turn your steering wheel in the direction you’re skidding. Slow down gradually. Your tires should reconnect with the road surface and give you back control.

If the rain or foggy windows make it too hard to see, pull over somewhere safe and wait a few minutes for the weather to change. There is no reason to put yourself, or others, in danger if it’s not necessary. Take a break.

And, finally, keep your vehicle maintenance up to date. Make sure your headlights, tail lights and windshield wipers are working correctly. Replace your tires, wiper blades or brakes when needed. Tire tread can seriously effect your traction, especially during wet conditions. Overused wiper blades can make it even harder to see on rainy days. And if you need lights replaced, now’s the time.
